Bad and Good News
hmm...
ok, i'll start off with the bad one then the good one next so the positivity is still there.
here they are!
upon visiting one of my fave bloggers ms. ala paredes, one of her accounts for the day talks about two politicians (Nasser Pangandamanan, Jr., city mayor of Masiu City in Lanao del Sur and Secretary Nasser Pangandaman of DAR) involved in beating up a 56-year-old father and a 14-year-old son for going against them after the politicians company overtook the already-taken flight by the father-and-son golfers happening just a day after Christmas of 2008 at Valley Golf and Country Club, Antipolo City.
the said beaten up company was actually with his daughter who accounted the whole incident in her blog. thank God they spared the daughter! My! the whole story was just so revolting which prompted me to write this (and if by chance read by others in this network). those politicians just can't do that but as terrible as it is, it's actually happening! tsk big time!
the family is actually asking for help in nailing these politicians to jail. i just really hope and pray that justice is served to them in the soonest of time!
on the brighter side, here's the good news:
Sandiganbayan: Caraga, WVisayas have fewest gov’t scalawags; NCR has most
isn't it a WOW?!i'm really surprised and glad to have read these headline in the GMANews.TV. well, if not so everybody knows, i come from Butuan which is one of the cities in Agusan del Norte which is also one of the four provinces comprising CARAGA region or Region 13, blah, blah, blah and blah...it's a bit comforting to hear something like that about our region but for NCR, it felt like nada. it wasn't a surprise at all. Oh! it must be discomforting and saddening for the folks in there.tsk!
i know for one that corruption has become generic in this country that includes this region of ours and my very own home-grown city but a filed cases of 41 for over 29 years compared to the 6,841 of NCR, that's a big difference if you look at the numbers, right?! though there are other matters of which such regions to compare with (whom i personally know and expect the total opposite results), this time it's ours to WOW for.
for the years i lived in butuan since i'm politically sensible, i had my own ranting moments about corrupt leaders in our city, of how political dynasty is so rampant in this part of the country, of how slow progsession is in terms of road and bridge development and other infrastructures such towering buildings like in Makati (ambisyosa!) ang big malls in Manila. there's actually more of this but for the past five years i think, the roads to provinces especially the way to surigao del sur has improved a lot making our ride pretty smooth during the halloween and holiday seasons, a new bridge was built in Butuan (the Diosdado Macapagal Brigde) which actually be of good use i believe in the long run, and lots of households in the said city, ours for one, are now enjoying if not so maybe comforted by the now-working water system and two municipalities (Cabadbaran and Bayugan) are now cities adding to the roster of cities of Caraga region. in terms of malls, we do actually have one which has been operating since i was still in my high school years.
when i told my mom about this news, she wasn't surprised and then explained that it's all because business are being monopolized here. this i forgot. it's the reason why we have so few industrial companies (i'm not sure if we do actually have one.waah.joke!) and big malls. anyhow, us folks here our pretty accustomed to this and been living pretty fine as well within our seams. i just hope, our region would be able to maintain this low corrupt rate if not diminished.;)
from all of these, there still hope for future development for the rest of us. we just have to believe and work for it!
to God be the Glory! God bless the afflicted and the weak.

my… i think some of it proves to be true about me at the moment…just some…

You are under considerable stress and you are almost about to ‘blow your top’ but you are fortunate enough to be able to exert control. Control is the name of the game and it is so good to realise that whatever the situation may be a this time - it will pass. You need to get away from everything for a while and if you do, you will find that, strangely enough, it will seem that most of your problems and situations will seem to wash away, just as the sea may wash away ‘footprints’ in the sand.
You are a true extrovert, frivolous and outgoing. You need to feel in control of any situation. If matters are not proceeding according to plan you tend to get extremely irritable and perhaps become difficult to live with.
Being emotionally inhibited you have no alternative at this time but to be a ‘watcher’ rather than a ‘doer’. At this time you feel as if you are being forced to compromise and stand back. But this is not the true you. Deep down there is that warm ‘open’ you which is awaiting the moment to burst forth - maybe like the chrysalis which will soon become the butterfly.
You are on tenterhooks and appear to be extremely nervous and upset. You are bored and you feel that life has far more to offer than this present day mundane existence. The way that you feel indicates that you have the need for a responsive and understanding relationship. You are prepared to follow up any opportunity which may present itself. However you are very choosy and you refuse to be swept off your feet unless integrity can proved to be 100% genuine. Therefore you are holding back, keeping your emotions in check because before you let down your guard you have to be sure. You are too trusting and you have no desire to be hurt again. You are responsive to conditions around you - but forever under control.
There is an inherent fear that you may be prevented from achieving the things you want. This activates your subconscious desire for peace of mind and mental security. It is increasingly obvious to you that the environment that you are in is not conducive to your well-being and so you are seeking fresh fields - somewhere free of conflict where you can RELAX and THINK.

HISTORY OF CARAGA
Many people wonder, “What does Caraga stand for?” or “What does it mean” It is the country’s newest region! Its history can be traced back to the 15th century when “Kalagans” were discovered by explorers. The Kalagans were believed to be of Visayan origin, in one of the three districts of Mindanao. The name was derived from two Visayan words: “kalag” for soul or people, and “An” for land. These people were believed to be brave and fearless, that early {croniclers called the region the “Land of the Brave and Fierce People” Kalagans were later called by the Spaniards as “ Caragans”, from which the word Caraga derived. They occupied the district composed of the provinces of Surigao, Northern part of Davao Oriental and the Eastern Misamis Oriental. The two Agusan provinces were then organized under the administrative jurisdiction of Surigao. Agusan became independent as a province in 1914. In 1960, Surigao was divided into Norte and Sur, and in June 1967, Agusan followed suit. Butuan then was a town of Agusan and it was only in 1950, by virtue of Republic Act 523, that the City Charter of Butuan was approved. On February 23, 1995, His excellency Fidel V. Ramos approved Republic Act 7901 creating Region 13, the Caraga Administrative Region.
It is composed of four provinces, three cities, seventy municipalities and 1,306 barangays. Agusan del Norte, Agusan del Sur, Surigao del Norte and the cities of Butuan and Surigao were once part of Region X, Northern Mindanao, while Surigao del Sur and Bislig City was part of Region XI.
The Regional Field Health Office of Caraga was organized in July 5, 1995 pursuant to R.A. 7901 of February 23, 1995

What a concise history of my dear region XIII, CARAGA region. Reminded me of my homework during my first year at ANHS during our Philippine History subject. For us to know kuno of what CARAGA stands for and not be ignorant of our region. We were even asked to draw the whole region marking the significant places such as the cities and municipalities, then a separate one for the Agusan del Norte alone because it is where we’re we belong. That day was Adlaw Hong Butuan! Classes were cancelled so happy were we then.
As far as I could remember, if my memory serves me right, the history and the drawing are separate assignments. The former was in our Science class then the latter was in our History class. I’m really confused. Any classmate around and help me remember it? Anyone from section I-Aristotle here?
Anyhow, indeed the assignment was collected the following day. Oh, yes classes were resumed and we even had oral recitation about it to check if we really read our homework. My drawing was fine, a clean one, though it was a pale output because I only used pencil and no color whatsoever because I’m no good when it comes to stuffs like that. The drawing itself was hard already. Pinaghirapan ko ‘yun.
A year or two before here in Iligan, Marion a classmate of mine, out of nowhere, raised the question in the above article perhaps thinking, just like so many others think especially those not coming from ours, that it’s just an acronym the same with NCR and CAR regions. Remembering that homework enabled me to answer and correct him right there and then. Thanks to our teachers for that assignment! It would have been a shame if I haven’t known. With that knowledge, Marion would sometimes tag me as the “isog na CARAGAnon.” And I would say, “Oh, yeah, so don’t dare go against me.” Haha…
Same goes to all of you out there! ;p Bitaw, peace y’all!
Let me know yours’. Malay natin mas kahadlukan pa mo kaysa sa amoa. ;)
Visit this website for other info of the said region.

on alyana
Going back, when we were told to attend a film showing on autism on a Saturday night of October 4 night I asked why that topic when it’s not related to any of our topics this sem. So for the sake of the incentives, we seniors lined up and suited ourselves unto seats available inside the COE amphitheater together with the sophomores from our department. Then we waited and waited. Finally, came in the film showers and the film maker herself, Ms. Mirana Medina! It was a leap which lift up a bit of our spirits and I thought that it was really something because the film maker herself graced the show and even entertained us and provided us a few details of her film while their putting up and fixing stuffs for the show.
She was once asked if Alyana is real. She said yes and that Alyana is her niece, the only one in the family with autism. In search for answers and understanding, bear fruit Alyana.
Lights off. Show reeling in five. Four. Three. Two. One…
The child in a glass ball.
A child of silience.
An empty fortress.
A child in a dream world.
The autistic child.
What a beautiful introductory poem by the film maker herself. I like it so much, so much that I hurriedly key it into my phone and saved it! As I was in awe of the film maker’s way of writing, slowly the admiration to the script in between the gaps has shifted to the unfolding of autism.
They gave definitions of autisms which in the simplest of it, it is a disorder where the person has a world of his own and that they say it is a disorder that chooses no one and strikes anyone. They also provided possible causes of it. Unfortunately, it has no known cause up to these times but there’s one which could be attributed to or a resulting cause of autism which is tuberous sclerosis, a nuerocutaneous problem, as it was mentioned in the film. One thing I remembered was the use of the term “atypical” in relation to the disorder when the physician was breaking the news to Mrs. Macapagal during the check up of her son in consultation for the odd actions displayed by his son together with the delay of his learning or growth. The term sounded less harsh yet comprehensible.
Echolalic behavior, lack of eye contact, inability to point to objects being pertained, repetitive body movements, sustained odd play, lack of pretend play, no fear of danger, indifference, throwing tantrums for no reason, inappropriate laughing or giggling and resistance to change. These are the different symptoms displayed by the atypcals Alyana, Gio, Andrei and other atyppicals which are explained by experts interviewed in the film and no less than the patient, loving mothers whose children have the disorder as well. Such are the likes of Mrs. Koe, whose concern doesn’t only cover her own son’s welfare but for the rest of the atypical child in the country. She is the president of Autism Society which is now spreading awareness across the nation regarding the said disorder through this film with the theme as their flagship which I believe is this: With learning comes deeper understanding.
So much has been tackled in the film like the related disorders or syndrome of Autism with examples such as Mr. Admirable (forgot his name but he really is admirable) with an Asperger syndrome. Part of it also, which is a breakthrough, was the passing of an executive order I think with regards to autism in the country, providing programs or institutions specific for them and the like disorders (e.g. Mental retardation). Programs and institutions that foster and teach them were also shown together with the problems encountered and the joy they’ve come to nourish even with the simplest learning or achievement a child or the group makes. I even caught myself watching with tears in my eyes not just for the atypical ones but more to the family, to the mothers who are primarily affected, for the patience, strength, courage, faith, hope and most especially the love they give them. I don’t know if I could equal what they have done if I am to have one autistic child.
It was also an enlightening when they’ve covered as well the myths that go with the disorder like the belief that there’s cure of it which is none, while others e.g. parents put the blame on their selves thinking that it’s because of their genes and the like which is unanswerable up to now, and thinking like it’s a bad karma to them or that their child is a child of evil which is only mental and again nothing to attribute to. This somehow opened up not only the minds of those in the family with an atypical but to all of us people being part of this society, for us to understand them and make things easy for them.
Lastly, for the management, they’ve shown there that there are actually institutions for the atypical and therapies provided for them e.g. art and music focusing on learning first the skills before scholastics so that these skills would come as a habit to them making them less dependent to others. They’ve also emphasized strong participation of parents with the child’s therapy thereby promoting bonding and understanding and appreciation to the child’s development. It’s good to know that those with minor autism could actually attend to the usual classes and see them participating and enjoying school.
I didn’t quite remember how the film ended, but I’m sure that I’ve wiped my tears right in time the lights were up. The showing up of the president Mrs. Koe, heightened so many of us that it felt like seeing a celebrity in personal. Well in truth, she was actually in the film.
I think the film entails not only to aware but also calls for support as in funding for in every 100 children around the globe one is atypical. And for a country with a population of more or less 80 M, do the math and the result is they wouldn’t just fit for a barangay but could even pass for a city! Given the fact that many is under the poverty threshold; just imagine the unimaginable for those kids and I don’t think you could sulk into it. Well, lucky are the ones like Alyana, Gio and Andrei whose family could afford to send them to therapies or to specific institutions.
It was a night of wonder and missing my bestfriend’s birthday party that night somehow made me feel less guilty.
So let me just sum it up with a little logic below:
AWARENESS EQUATES LEARNING.
LEARNING EQUATES UNDERSTANDING.
AND UNDERSTANDING EQUATES ACCEPTANCE.
THEREFORE, AWARENESS IS TO ACCEPT.
